I never appreciated a good beer until I was in my mid-twenties. I remember watching The Shawshank Redemption, when Andy Dufresne trades tax advice for a few ‘bottles of suds”, and thinking what a waste of a cold drink. My first true revelation came with the pairing of fried chicken to beer, and then, to greater effect, pizza to beer.
So when Great Lakes Brewing Company asked me what beer I love as part of their “All Yours” campaign, I couldn’t help but gravitate to the Turntable Pils. Not only is it the perfect accompaniment to pizza (a necessary qualification), the taste is smooth and easy for this beer novice to throw back. Turntable is named in honor of Cleveland’s deep-cut music history. The A-side is earthy with hop aromas, and The B-side is a balanced malt groove. Vinyl record puns aside, there are few little luxuries like popping open a cold bottle of beer with good tunes floating through the air.
If you are somehow unfamiliar with Great Lakes Brewing, they reside in Cleveland’s Ohio City, make the best Christmas Ale in the world (just the facts,) and are celebrating their 30th anniversary this year. They also recently took over Eating Books’ Instagram for a day, sharing snippets of life at the brewery. As a long time fan of GLBC it was fun to catch a glimpse of their operations (their work hard/play hard dynamic includes company-wide beer taste tests and racing Hot Wheels.)
Follow @glbc_cleveland for news about the Pint Size Pub summer tour, a celebration of their 30th anniversary, as well as the launch of the “All Yours” campaign. The traveling version of the brewpub will be making stops throughout the entire region over the course of the summer.
